City to install new bike path signs on Collier Boulevard

The city's ad hoc bike committee recently picked new signs for eight-foot shared use sidewalks on Collier Boulevard.

According to Marco city officials, the new signs arrived and will be switched later this month.

The committee collectively discussed and custom designed the signs after considerable debate, said Jim Miller, the city advisor for the bike committee.

"The end result was to put up a simple sign that helped educate the public to share the pathway," Miller said.

The city spent a little more than $1,300 to buy the new signage. Each new sign cost about $22 and 60 were bought, Miller said.

"We will be using the existing poles and hardware to install them, so we are saving those costs," Miller said. "City public works staff will be installing them."

Of the 60 signs, about three-fourths will be put up on Collier Boulevard. Others will be used on shared use path on Leland Drive and Sand Hill St., Miller said.

The city had received input from citizens that the old signs were difficult to understand, according to Miller.

"We had gotten multiple calls from the public that the existing green signs were confusing," Miller said.

City employees are expected to start changing the signs later this week.

"Staff will begin the sign replacement process later this week, and will gradually replace all signs on Collier," Miller said.
